Chicago search happens at the neighbourhood line.
Sundayable runs marketing for Chicago small businesses, $1,000 CAD a month. Lincoln Park and Pilsen are different markets with different map boxes, and a page that says “serving Chicagoland” is in neither of them.
Search takes about 90 days. You see what shipped every week before that.
Chicago runs the hottest agency ad auction of the four US metros we measured — a competition index of 58 against San Diego’s 34 — on 1,600 monthly searches at $9.15 a click. Sundayable is a done-for-you service for local businesses rather than an agency competing in that auction: content, local SEO, reviews and lead follow-up at $1,000 CAD a month, month to month, ad spend separate.
How does Chicago compare on cost?
Monthly searches, the going Google Ads rate and the auction competition index. Google Ads, August 2026.
| Metro | Searches / month | Cost per click | Ad competition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicago | 1,600 | $9.15 | 58 / 100 |
| Los Angeles | 1,300 | $10.12 | 49 / 100 |
| Seattle | 590 | $12.18 | 49 / 100 |
| San Diego | 1,900 | $7.81 | 34 / 100 |
A crowded auction is a signal about the agencies, not about your customers. It tells you how many firms are bidding to reach business owners here — which is why the pitch in your inbox is loud, and why the quiet channels are worth more than they look.
Why does “Chicagoland” hurt you in search?
Because nobody searches it. They search their neighbourhood, or they search a service and let Google supply the location. The map result then answers from where the person is standing: Logan Square gets one set of three, West Loop gets another, Evanston another again.
A single page covering the whole metro competes in none of those boxes and reads as generic to a reader who knows the city. The fix is unglamorous: a page for each neighbourhood you genuinely serve, written by someone who knows which street it is on.
The seasonal swing is the other thing outsiders miss. January behaves nothing like June for most local businesses here, and a content calendar that ignores winter hours, closures and the January lull is a calendar written for a different city.
What we run each month
- Google Business Profile kept current, including the holiday and winter hours people actually check before driving over
- A page for each neighbourhood you serve, with the cross streets, the parking and the transit a local would recognise
- Review requests after each job, and a drafted reply for every review that arrives
- Weekly posts and monthly reels made from what already happens at your business — no shoot required
- Name, address and phone consistent across Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and your industry directories
- On the other lines: one managed paid channel on Paid Growth, and lead follow-up wired into your CRM on Automation
What does it cost, and who is doing it?
Organic Growth is $1,000 a month in CAD: your website, our team making the work by hand, and the profile, local SEO and review replies run for you. Ads, sales email and automation are separate lines you can add or skip. Ad spend is separate and stays in your own account.
A Chicago agency retainer generally starts around $2,500 a month before media. That is the right price for a multi-location group and the wrong one for a single shop that mostly needs its listing finished and its reviews moving.
We work remotely from Toronto and British Columbia, with a call each month. No Chicago office.
How many neighbourhood pages should we have?
As many as you genuinely serve and no more. Three real ones outrank fifteen templated ones, and Google names city and region lists specifically as a spam pattern.
We have locations in the city and the suburbs. Does that change things?
Yes. Each location needs its own profile, its own reviews and its own page, so multi-location businesses are quoted per location on the consultation.
Do you know the market well enough from Canada?
We know how local search works and we ask you for what we do not know — which streets, which suburbs, what changes in January. Anyone claiming Chicago expertise from a distance is selling you something.
Are ads worth it at $9.15 a click?
After the profile and the page are finished, sometimes. That is the Paid Growth line at $1,000 a month, and we will tell you when the same money is better spent on reviews and content.
How long before something moves?
Content and review replies ship in the first week, so month one is work you can see. Search rankings take about 90 days. Ads are the only line built to move a number sooner than that.
