San Diego is the softest big market we measured.
Sundayable runs marketing for San Diego small businesses, $1,000 CAD a month. More people here look for an agency than in Los Angeles, and the clicks cost a third less.
Search takes about 90 days to move. You see what shipped every week before that.
San Diego produces 1,900 monthly searches for a marketing agency — more than Los Angeles or Chicago — at the lowest cost per click and the lowest ad competition of the four US metros we measured. Sundayable is a done-for-you service for local businesses there: content, local SEO, reviews and lead follow-up at $1,000 CAD a month, month to month, with ad spend separate.
Why is San Diego cheaper to compete in than Seattle?
Because demand is high and the auction is not. Google Ads, August 2026.
| Metro | Searches / month | Cost per click | Ad competition |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Diego | 1,900 | $7.81 | 34 / 100 |
| Los Angeles | 1,300 | $10.12 | 49 / 100 |
| Seattle | 590 | $12.18 | 49 / 100 |
| Chicago | 1,600 | $9.15 | 58 / 100 |
Three times Seattle’s demand at 64% of the click price, and the least crowded auction on the list. For a local business that reads as room: the same monthly budget buys more here than it does two hours up the freeway, and the free channels are less picked over.
What decides the map result in San Diego?
Reviews, mostly, and whether your profile looks like a business that is still open. The county is a chain of distinct places — North Park, La Jolla, Chula Vista, Carlsbad — and each one runs its own map box. Within those few miles, the business with forty recent reviews and a profile updated this month beats the one with twelve from 2024.
The second factor is the military and tourism churn. A large share of your customers arrived recently, have no local word of mouth to draw on, and are choosing purely from what they can see online. That cuts both ways: it is why a thin profile bleeds here, and why a complete one wins faster than in a settled market.
What do we run each month?
Finish the profile first
Categories, every service as its own entry, correct holiday hours, photos on a schedule, a weekly post. It is free, it sits above the ads, and in this market it is under-contested.
Get reviews moving
A request after each job through a link you can text, and a reply drafted for every review. Recency counts more than total here, because so many of your customers are new to the city.
One page per place you serve
North Park is not La Jolla and the page should not pretend otherwise. Each one names what a local would recognise, or it does not get written.
Then, and only then, paid
At $7.81 a click this is the market where ads make sense soonest. That is the Paid Growth line at $1,000 a month, once the landing side can hold the traffic.
What does it cost?
Organic Growth is $1,000 a month: website built, hosted and kept edited, our team making the work by hand, local SEO, the profile and review replies run for you, and a person on your Slack channel. Ads, sales email and automation are three separate lines. CAD, month to month, ad spend separate.
We are in Toronto and British Columbia, and the work is remote. There is no San Diego address and we are not going to invent one; the work is remote with a call each month.
Is a cheaper click a reason to start with ads?
It is a reason to get there sooner, not to start there. Ads pointed at a four-review profile and a thin page pay full price for a bounce, in any market. Finish the free channels, then buy the traffic.
How many reviews do I need?
Enough that the top three in your map box no longer out-number you, and recent enough that the newest is from this month. That is a moving target, which is why the requests go out on a schedule rather than in bursts.
We serve all of San Diego County. One page or many?
Many, but only for places you actually work in. A page for every suburb in the county is the pattern Google names as doorway abuse, and it earns nothing.
How long before this shows up?
The first month is production you can check: the profile filled in, the pages written, every review answered. Search rankings take about 90 days. Ads are the one line built to move a number inside the month, and they are priced separately. If nothing has moved by month three, that is when to change direction rather than wait longer.
Can I stop?
